Family portraits are magic. They visually document the people closest to you in a moment of time. And more than likely, your family portrait will occupy a treasured spot in your home for years to come.
Chances are, as a result, you want to prepare yourself and your loved ones in advance of the shoot. Just a little prep goes a long way!
Here are a few tips to keep in mind approaching your portrait session.
Try not to stress before or during the experience. We’ve got this! The most important part of a family portrait is that you’re actually taking the time to do a family portrait. Many families put them off, waiting for that best time. They wait until that extra five pounds is shed, until Jenny’s tooth grows back in, or until Joey gets a haircut. But waiting means the photo isn’t taken, and you lose memories. You lose moments. So, think calm. Ideally, have everyone get a good night’s sleep, too.
Consider where the portrait will live in your home. That decision informs what clothes and colors to wear. You want the choices to complement your style. If your home has a coastal vibe, think about how your dress might reinforce that. If it’s a holiday photo, dress to celebrate the season.
Moms in families are usually the decisionmakers, so it’s best for her to figure out precisely what she wants to wear and have the rest of the family plan accordingly. Matching isn’t necessary. Coordinating is. It helps to wear similar color tones — three colors that complement each other. If Mom is decked out in a favorite evening dress and the daughter is in weathered jeans, that’s probably not going to do it. Save the brightest colors for the New Year’s Eve bash.
We can help schedule hair and makeup appointments the day of the shoot for anyone who asks. Photoshop is great for retouches, but keep it in mind it can only do so much. No worries, though! We will make sure you look your very best.
Our family portraits can be done in the studio or on location at places that are beautiful or meaningful to your family.
If you’re bringing toddlers or a skeptical husband, that’s totally fine. Consider toting snacks for the kids, but try to avoid chocolate or suckers that take a long time to devour. Snacks might keep hubby happy, too!
If pets are part of the family, by all means, let’s include them in the portrait. Having a few dog treats handy is genius!
